Abstract

The efficient use of water and soil in complex systems, such as irrigation districts, requires the management of large quantities of information, forecast algorithms and the taking of decisions in a diffuse and uncertain environment. At the Mexican Institute for Water Technology (IMTA), a decision making support system, whose final component is an expert system, was developed. The system was created for an irrigation module in northern Mexico. The FAO is cooperating in the validation of the system, with good user response. This article includes a description of the system philosophy, components and development, the definition of the decision rules.
