Abstract
Solid phase nitridation of titanium under CO2 laser irradiation has been investigated in order to point out the specificities of a laser treatment on the nitrided layers growth. Results pointed out that the major specificities only resulted from the particular thermal cycles induced by the laser irradiation. Direct irradiation of the substrate did not produce any specific assisted nitride growth. Moreover, in the case of titanium nitridation no significant evolution of the CO2 laser - surface coupling resulted from the superficial nitrided layer growth. 1 Introduction Due to their low weight
