Abstract

Sensitivity analysis and optimization by the BEM for volume integral functionals R.A. Merici & R.H Kul Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Istanbul Technical University, Maslak, ABSTRACT Boundary condition sensitivity analysis and optimization is investigated with respect to volume integral functionals for thermal problems. General sensitivity expressions are derived by the adjoint variable method. Har- monic primary and biharmonic adjoint sources are handled with higher- order fundamental solutions in the BEM disci, -tization of the problems. Numerical sensitivities are compared with 1-dim. exact solutions, whilst a constrained optimization problem involving a turbine blade profile is inves- tigated for practical interest. INTRODUCTION Boundary condition optimization problems are of importance in all fields of engineering [1-4]. In thermal problems, boundary temperature, heat flux, ambient temperature and heat transfer coefficient are the crucial variables to
