Abstract

Mould filling is a critical stage in the production of sound and high-quality cast- ings, specially in the case of complex shaped castings with thin and/or varying thickness walls. Proper modelling of mould filling, as part of a CAD system for design and analysis of casting processes, can provide valuable insight into the prediction of the quality of finished castings and minimising production costs. A numerical model to simulate filling of 2D mould cavities is presented. The flow of molten metal and the evolution of its free surface are modelled using an extended SOLA-VOF based code. This in coupled with a heat transfer analysis using an energy /enthalpy type formulation in which solidification is accounted for automatically. The model also caters
