Abstract

Flow and thermal characteristics of magnetic fluid flow in a partly heated vertical pipe with magnetic fields were investigated numerically. The effect of relative position of applied magnetic field to the heated region on the heat transfer characteristics was considered particularly in the present study. Variations of the total heat transfer coefficient (Nu) as well as the local one were obtained in flow and temperature fields with various positions of magnetic field. It was shown that the heat transfer characteristics were affected by the magnetic field strength and its relative position to the heated region. The total amount of heat transfer from the heated pipe wall was substantially increased with higher magnetic field and the higher Reynolds number at an appropriate position of magnetic field.
