Abstract

A vertically integrated numerical model has been developed to study the circulation, salinity and pollutant dispersal in Hooghly estuary. The model is fully non-linear and uses a semi-explicit finite difference scheme to solve the basic equations on a staggered grid. The model simulated water levels, currents and salinity have been validated with the available observations. By introducing BOD as a tracer, the pollutant transport in the estuary has been carried out for different outfall locations. Various scenarios of pollutant dispersal with different discharge conditions have also been presented. 1 Introduction Water being the lifeline of all human activities, assessment of its quality is very important for its various uses. Sometimes it may happen that there may be sufficient quantity of
