Abstract

A comprehensive numerical model developed for the analysis of near-net-shape continuous casting processes was implemented in a generalized coordinate form and solves for turbulent heat and momentum transport along with solidification in the cast. The model is used to investigate the influence of 3D heat transfer conditions upon solidification. 1 Introduction Continuous casting has grown from the experimental and pilot stages to a mature technology, and continuously cast steel billets, blooms and slabs are now produced with high yield, quality and profitability. Recent market demands for higher quality at lower cost, however, have forced continuous casting to focus on near-net-shape or direct casting. The goal is to eliminate intermediate processing steps by producing castings close to the requirements for the next processing
