Abstract

A two-phase composite with uniformly distributed inclusions is considered. It is assumed that the inclusions and matrix are elastic, isotropic and are subject to isotropic shrinkage. Effective (homogenised) elastic and shrink- age properties of the composite are determined from known properties of the both components. This is done by two different approaches. The first one is based on the Hashin composite sphere model, and the average ma- terial characteristics are presented as algebraic expressions with respect to the components characteristics and the inclusion volume fraction. The sec- ond approach is an application of the asymptotic homogenisation procedure, which is based on solutions to some boundary value problems of elasticity on the composit
