This article describes the environmental monitoring system UWEDAT, which comprises a central host and outstations. The central host, its functionality and software applications, have already been introduced at the Air Pollution X conference (Segovia, 2002). This article will concentrate on the new UWEDAT-LAN station-computer. A station-computer manages an outstation and collects data from any kind of measuring device. UWEDAT-LAN was developed during the last three years and follows our successful series of station-computers, which started in the early 1980’s. Thus, this new computer combines more than 20 years of experience and technological leadership in the field of environmental monitoring. We will briefly outline the tasks and the technology in this abstract and discuss them in the following sections. A station-computer should be able to work with a variety of different measuring devices. UWEDAT-LAN offers the broadest range of interfaces available on the market: Profibus, CAN (Controller Area Network), RS232, RS422 and TCP/IP. The flexible software-structure allows a quick and simple implementation of protocol-drivers. Currently implemented are Profibus PA, Bayern-Hessen, Modbus TCP/IP, and proprietary protocols such as IMI-CAN, which connects analogue measuring devices with the station-computer. Then we will describe our Intelligent Meter Interface with CAN fieldbus (IMI-CAN) and the management of UWEDAT-LAN with UWEDAT ServiceTool. Keywords: UWEDAT, environmental monitoring, environmental data acquisition, outstation, UWEDAT-LAN, station-computer, CAN, Profibus, Modbus, Bayern-Hessen.
