Abstract

Design of hydraulic structures, optimal operation of reservoirs, and flood forecasting involve estimation of flood flows Xj, with given prespecified return period. We present here some theoretical aspects concerning the fitting of statistical distributions to annual maximal flows, which is a privileged tool for determining Xj and its confidence intervals. We also present the Halphen distributions of type A, B and B~* and a synthesis of the most recent theoretical developments about them.
