Abstract

Two different numerical approaches for simulating salt intrusion into coastal aquifers are presented. One approach is based on a structural grid while the other on the finite element method. Main advantages and drawbacks of each approach are discussed. Attention is also devoted to the validation problem. 1 Introduction Salt intrusion into coastal aquifers is a problem in Italy where the shoreline is long. The Italian Electricity Board (ENEL-SpA) is interested in studying this problem in connection to the building of thermoelectrical power plants near the sea. In this case pumping of water from the groundwater aquifer can cause an advance of the salt water, polluting the fresh water in the area. To avoid this all the devices are taken, but it is difficult to forecast their effects. So it is useful to sim
