Abstract

With greater use being made of computational hydrodynamic and pollution transport models for water quality assessments of coastal and estuarine areas, increasing emphasis needs to be focused on providing an accurate treatment of the complex boundary configurations which are typical of coastal regions. This paper presents details of a depth-averaged two-dimensional numerical model which makes use of a curvilinear or boundary-fitted non-orthogonal grid. The implementation of the boundary-fitted procedure permits an accurate and economical discretisation of irregular estuary geometries. The capabilities of the numerical model are demonstrated by simulating the upper reaches of the Severn Estuary on the west coast of England. Results from the non- o
