Abstract

The greater part of municipal and industrial solid wastes is current- ly disposed of in landfills. Landfill effluents, which are called leachate, constitute a major hazard for surface and groundwater resources. This hazard can be reduced by proper landfill design, construction and operation. The first step though in reducing risks related to solid waste disposal is proper landfill site selection. This paper investigates the effect of landfill site selection on the contamination of underlying aquifers, which may be intruded by leach- ate.
