Gyftaki Department of Civil Engineering Transportation Sector, Democritus University of Thrace, Greece Abstract The transport management, the distribution of time, the sequences to the environment and the urban regeneration affect the existing quality of life to the big cities. The role of public transport (metro lines - trams - busses) to upgrade lifestyle in big cities is extremely important because public transportation systems are friendly to the environment and they have the capability to transfer a huge number of passengers. In this paper we will examine the principles both to the transport planning and to the transport policy that should be applied to cities with saturate roads, such as Athens.
