Abstract

The catalytic role of the science community: making sustainability work M. B. Neace Mercer University, USA Abstract Good science is at the core of developing a base of knowledge necessary for the attainment of sustainable development. Over the past three decades the scientific community has made significant strides in understanding how Planet Earth lives, works, evolves and adjusts (heals herself) under dynamic conditions. This progress, even though outstanding, is not sufficient for the attainment of sustainable development. Two models are presented for discussion that will address this issue. The discussion advances the concept that the scientific community has the potential to serve as a catalyst for generating the social capital necessary to attain sustainable development. The first model, a theoretical overview, shows that Planet Earth is an integrated, holistic paradigm, including the muItistakeholder impact of homo sapiens on the biosphere.
