Abstract

In Surrey, car ownership and traffic flows are amongst the highest in the country. The local borough councils have been monitoring NO] levels since 1993. This paper presents and discusses this information with the aid of a Geographic Information System (GIS). Data from ten fixed monitoring sites are analysed and three of these sites, all within a busy urban town, are discussed in detail. The results indicate no significant annual change in NO] levels from 1993-1999. However, one site does show more variability on a monthly basis. The data from all ten sites are combined with traffic flow information and represented spatially using the GIS. The results highlight potential NO] pollution 'hot spots' where the mean annual concentration exceeds 21 ppb. The work forms part of a wider research effort aimed
