Abstract

Modelling Interactions Between CHU Absorption and N%O Production in Soils A contribution to subproject BIATEX-2 Alex De Visscher, Pascal Boeckx, Annick Goossens and Oswald Van Cleemput Laboratory of Applied Physical Chemistry, Faculty of Agricultural and Applied Biological Sciences, University of Ghent, Coupure Links 653, B-9000 Gent, Belgium In order to assess the nature of the interaction between CtL* oxidation and N2O production due to nitrification in a landfill cover soil, kinetic models for the description of these processes were developed. Starting from the Michaelis- Menten equation, a model was developed that accounts for the interaction between ammonium and the soil, and for the nature of the interaction between ammonium and the methane mono-oxygenase enzyme. The model was tested successfully with experimental kinetic data. Introduction Methanotrophic bacteria in soils, especially in landfill cov
