Abstract

An Ozone Budget for the UK A contribution to subproject TOR-2 M Coyle, D Fowler and R.I. Smith Institute of Terrestrial Ecology, Edinburgh Research Station, Bush Estate, Penicuik, Midlothian, EH26 OQB, UK Ozone is present in both the planetary boundary layer (PEL) and the free troposphere where it is produced by the photochemical reactions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This ground level ozone damages plants, materials and human health as well as playing an important role in the atmospheric chemistry of many other species. A budget for ozone in the PEL is valuable at the country scale to demonstrate the balance between production and loss terms as air is advected over the country. The budget of ozone in the PEL is primarily regulated by: * deposition to surfaces at ground level * photochemical production and loss or gain in the PEL from the free tropospher
