Abstract

Preliminary Results of SO: Oxidation in Synthetic Solutions Containing Various Catalyticaly Active Metal Ions A contribution to subproject AEROSOL J. Tursic and M. Bizjak National Institute of Chemistry, Hajdrihova 19, P.O.B. 3430, SI-1001 Ljubljana, Slovenia Introduction Besides oxidation of SO: in the presence of oxidants such as O:, O$ and H:O: in the gaseous phase, transformation of SO: in the aqueous phase can play an important role in atmospheric chemistry. It is well known that some transition metals found in aerosol particles (particularly Fe and Mn) may have an important catalytic effect on autoxidation of S(IV) by oxygen (Brandt, van Eldik, 1995). The order of catalytic activity varies significantly depending on the selected experimental conditions such as oxidation state of the metal ion, concentration range and pH (Coichev and van Eldik, 1994).
