Abstract

Transient state solutions to saturated flow equations of sloping drainage systems are developed for the case of transverse parallel drainage pipes; their extension to the more classical crest-shaped drainage systems of landfills is however possible. They predict the influence of slope on the functioning of drainage systems and they help assessing the validity of steady state equations for the design of leachate collection systems or of landfill cap drainage systems. This is of practical interest for engineering design especially in irregular rainfall regions. 1 Introduction The drainage of landfills is part of international legislation that aims to protect fresh water. Liquid solution that results from household deposits, manufacturer's or agricultural waste, is collected and evacuated by an adequate drainage
