Abstract
The implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) asks for the commitment of all European member states. There are many different issues to be considered simultaneously and appropriate methodologies and tools are needed to overcome the complexity of this mission. This article presents an integrated framework for solving wastewater problems, at a regional level, aiming at achieving the WFD goals. This is a challenging task from all viewpoints: environmental, economic, social, and technical. The various levels of intervention deemed necessary for this purpose are described and the need for appropriate methodological tools is analyzed.
