Abstract

The objective of this study is to provide detailed information on the retrofit design of reinforced concrete bridges. Several retrofitting techniques that can be easily implemented in countries with high seismic risk, such as Greece, are presented. Special emphasis is given on the retrofit of bridge piers using steel jackets, reinforced concrete jackets and composite material jackets. Furthermore, several techniques for the retrofit design of superstructure are discussed. A comparison between traditional and new retrofit methods is made in order to rationalize the increase in demand for use of recently developed retrofitting techniques. A design example is also included in this study. The example focuses on the retrofit design of a bridge pier using either a fiberglass-epoxy or a carbon fiber-epoxy composite jacket. As an altern
