Abstract

The environmental issue related with aircraft noise, if not properly handled can be a source of community disturbance in residential areas in the vicinity of airports and restrict operability and expansion of the airports themselves. Several measures can be implemented for containing or reducing noise pollution generated by airports: aircraft noise abatement, proper land planning, noise surcharge, restriction of night flights, noise monitoring, anti-noise measures, insulation programmes, slot allocation, taking-off procedures, infrastructure improvements. The study aims to identify the main sources of noise generated by conventional aeroplanes (propulsion systems and aerodynamic flow) in order to determine the acoustic field for a single event or operation from the known characteristics of sources of noise and their trajectories.
