Abstract

The role of technology in train control and traffic management systems on a heavy haul line D. Kruger System Development, Spoornet (COALlink), South Africa. Abstract In a capital-intensive operation like a heavy haul line huge benefits can be gained by optimising the utilisation of the expensive rolling stock and infrastructure. This requires world class processes and systems. The need for optimising these processes, availability of new technologies and the performance levels of existing systems forced the coal line to embark on an upgrade program. Three years ago a program was initiated to upgrade and replace these technologies and systems. To maximise the effect of the investment a totally integrated technology strategy was required. The purpose of this paper is to set out this strategy for train control and management systems as well as the enabling technologies on the coal line.
