Abstract

Thermal load of block-braked solid wheel on Yugoslav railways D. Milutinovic & A. Radosavljevic Mechanical Engineering Department, Institute of Transportation CIP, Belgrade, Yugoslavia Abstract Thermal load of the block-braked solid wheel railway vehicles is dominant among other types of loads. This load, mainly a consequence of long-term braking on down-grades for maintaining the defined constant speed, is the main cause of occurrence of cracks on wheel tread and finally of fractures of wheel. The paper gives results of an analysis of thermal load of a railway vehicle block- braked solid wheel on characteristic section of the line in the Yugoslav Railways network. Thermal analysis was done using the finite elements method which was also used for obtaining wheel temperature and stress states in simulated operating conditions. 1 Introduction For more than 15 years, research is going on in Europe on fracture occurrence, caused by thermal load on block-braked solid whee
