Abstract

Dynamic vehicle reactions on Ruch type S-shaped superelevation ramp B. KufVer Abstract The horizontal alignment is often the binding constraint for permissible train speeds. On curves where the horizontal radius is binding, tilting trains may run approximately 25% faster than conventional non-tilting trains. However, the lengths of superelevation ramps and transition curves may reduce permissible speeds for both types of trains to lower values than the curve radii. Increasing the lengths of transition curves requires a lateral shift of the track, which may be uneconomical. Hence, the question arises as to whether or not the conventional linear type of superelevation ramp and the clothoid type of transition curve ought to be replaced by smoothed S-shaped superelevation ramps and corresponding types of transition curves. In the present study, the original and a simplified Ruch type of S-shaped ramps and transition curves have been evaluated. Dynamic vehicle re
