Abstract The semi-demand operation of the intercity railway transportation in order to improve the service level and reduce the operational costs is proposed in this paper. The semi-demand operation is a flexible operation method based on the passengers' demands, its definition is given firstly. Assuming the intelligent pas- sengers assistance system and a new seat reservation method proposed by authors are introduced to a railway transportation system, then, we shown the possibility for realizing the new operation method.
