Abstract

Effective product design that satisfies functional requirements and can be eas- ily maintained requires a vast amount of knowledge on the part of the design engineer. This paper considers ways in which maintainability as design prop- erty may be qualitatively and quantitatively introduced into design. It presents problems connected with creating and using the Maintainability Design Sys- tem (MDS). 1 Introduction One of the major problems plaguing shipbuilding industry is a lack of com- munication between design and maintenance engineering. It involves a low level of maintainability of ship equipment. One approach to overcome, it is to engage maintenance engineers in the design process. For many reasons, it didn't give expected results because maintainability design was treated as a minor task. Naturally, design engineer
