Abstract

Smart materials systems are a relatively new concept that has gained widespread attention in the defense, aerospace and academic communities. They provide smartness, a functionality that adds significant value to materials, technologies, or end-products. Smartness enables system performance enhancements that are not possible with traditional non-smart approaches. Smart materials systems offer substantial near-term business potential across a broad range of technologies, applications and markets. A full scale application of such advanced materials (especially in automotive and aircraft industry) is hindered by the high cost of manufacturing.
