Abstract

Collecting of current is a problem of primary importance in the railroad environment: locomotives currently used on high speed trains supplied with only one pantograph, collect currents up to 2500 A, because of 3 kV system. Under these working conditions, the present pantograph-catenary system reaches extremely critical limits, even though it has been performing normally for many years without particular problems. It's much more difficult to prevent detachment and other problems, when two pantographs are involved at train ends as in the case of the ETR500 train set, where the second pantograph encounters the overhead line that has already been moved
