Abstract

Structures consisting of repeated unit cells are common in civil engineering applications. They can be classified under periodic or quasi periodic sys- tems, which have unique structural dynamic characteristics. For the case of perfectly ordered systems, the vibration modes are extended to the whole set of substructures. When some of the building blocs are slightly imper- fect and weak coupling is present between them, considerable changes in these modes are observed. Vibration energy may be confined over part of the system while another part of it may remain almost motionless. This is called mode localization and may be used to control oscillations excited by grou
