Abstract

The goal is to study impact and foreign object damage to plate structures using testing and simulations. The specimens represent components which are used to protect structures against impact damage. The following methods are used. A series of impact testing is made with chosen parameters. The specimens are circular plates of steel and composites. The results are analysed using nonlinear FEM type codes. Qualitative visualisations of the propagation of the damage of the materials are obtained using multibody dynamics simulation. These results show the ranges of the simulation parameters which give best correspondence with experiments. These improved virtual prototype models are expected to give reliable res
