Abstract

The H\go-ken Nanbu Harthquake, 1995 caused devastating damages to structures in and round Kobe. Among them, traffic viaduct structures have suffered considerable bending and/or shear force failures from it. At the same time, we have evidenced some unprecedented structural damages (see Fig. 1) which should better be interpreted by the tensile/compressive stress failures due to the impulsive seismic loading. This paper focuses on those structural behavior under such type of loading and refers to the possibility of impact failure during the motions. 1 Introduction The Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake. 1995 has brought destructive damages to building structures and urban infrastructure structures in Kobe and in its vicinity* The description of the quake by the local residents were as follows: they felt
