Abstract

Extrados ties for structural restoration of vaults E. Giuriani, A. Gubana Department of Civil Engineering, University of Brescia, Italy 1 Introduction In every structural intervention of historical buildings it is very important to evaluate the safety degree of the existing structure as best as possible. This problem is quite difficult for masonry vaults, but it can not be neglected especially when an increment of load is planned. The greatest difficulties are due to uncertainties on the masonry mechanical properties and on the real behaviour of the vault, which also depends on the interaction with masonry wall system. A strengthening intervention is frequently needed. From the philosophical point of view, structural strengthening is better accepted when the original behaviour is maintained and any new structural element can be eventually removed with no damage.
