Abstract

The paper describes the criteria for selection of ropes for catenary mooring system and discusses the alternative solutions for a modern catenary mooring system. The mechanical properties of high performance synthetic fibre ropes (HPSFR), namely aramid, HMPE and LCP, are analysed. These materials are attractive for applications requiring high stiffness, high tenacity and low density. Advantages and limitations of these ropes, relative to the medium performance fibre ropes, such as nylon and polyester, and steel wire ropes, will also be discussed in the light of the requirements for mooring applications. 1 Introduction The modern super tankers and offshore installations have created the need for better class of ropes and materials, this combined with th
