Abstract

Results of the research on Al-Zn-Mg alloys, aimed at their application to ship's hull structures to be subjected to heavy loads K. Cudny*, N. Puchaczewski^ ^Technical University of Gdansk, Narutowicza 11/12, 80-952 Gdansk, Poland *Polski Rejestr Statkow, 80-416 Gdansk, Poland Introduction The research on weldable aluminium alloys has been conducted for more than last twenty years. Initially, the research covered Al-Mg alloys, the description thereof has been subject of numerous publications: e.g. Cudny, Puchaczewski [3], Cudny [4], Cudny, Kyziol, Czechowski [7] and other papers. These alloys are of not high mechanical properties (see fig. 1), although they have good cor- rosion resistance. They don't meet however the requirements for welded, light structures subjected to very heavy loads. There was a need to apply the alumin- ium alloys of mechanical properties better than these of Al-Mg alloys, in the construction of ship's structures. The research have then begun, conc
