Abstract

Wave modelling along the Belgian coast using WAM Cycle 4 coupled with a storm surge model J. Monbaliu, W. Luo Laboratory of Hydraulics, de Croylaan 2, B-3001 Leuven, Belgium ABSTRACT In the present study, the Cycle 4 version of the WAM (Wave Model) model (hereafter referred to as WAM4) coupled with a storm surge model, named as COWAM4, has been developed to predict the ocean wave spectra for the Belgian coastal zone. A one way coupling approach is considered here, i.e., only information of currents and water depths from a tidal model is passed to the wave model. The WAM4 model implementation was made on a coarse 50 km x 50 km grid covering the entire North Sea area and a nested fine 10 km x 10 km grid for the limited area of the southern North Sea. The hindcast study was made for the month of October 1992. The significant wave height predicted by WAM4 was compared with buoy data at stations A2-buoy and Westhinder. The preliminary results from COWAM4 with an artifi
