Abstract

In this paper a turbulence model of a bore front is used to compute the energy dissipation rate at the bed. A relationship between sediment concentration and dissipation is developed. This is coupled to a numerical model which simulates conditions in the surf zone. The distribution of longshore sediment transport and the total transport are computed. The results are compared with field data. 1 Introduction On the sea-bed, beneath breaking waves, the flow comprises oscillatory currents (with the passage of each wave) unidirectional currents (due to changes in momentum induced by wave breaking) and a complex turbulence field (which is generated both by the currents and the breaking of the waves).
