Abstract

A boundary element method for multiple crack problems based on micromechanics and complex variables M. Denda & Y.-F. Dong Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, Rutgers University, P.O. Box 909, TVew Jersey ABSTRACT A numerical technique for elastic multiple crack problems that is both ver- satile and extraordinarily accurate is established. The versatility is brought in by adopting the micromechanics approach in the formulation. The ac- curacy is maintained by maximizing the chance of analytical evaluation which is made possible by the complex variable approach. INTRODUCTION In this paper we. identify the micromechanics tools and their roles in the elastic multiple crack problems, construct, and use them systematically with the help of Muskhelishvili's [1] complex variable formalism. Analyses of cracks in arbitrarily shaped finite bodies require a numerical method such as the boundary element method. We develop a direct formulation of the boundary ele
