Abstract A time domain boundary element method is presented for the analysis of nonlinear fluid sloshing in a tank. The fluid is considered inviscid and the fluid motion irrotational. The nodal points on the free surface are considered as Lagrangian points, their positions are followed, and for each time step the nonlinear free surface condition is considered on the real moving boundary. For time stepping, the previous surface position is taken as the first position for the iteration at the current time step, and two to five iterations will give a convergent surface position of the current time step. For every 5 time steps, surface smoothing is carried out to eliminate the saw-toothed appearance and to ensure time iteration sta
