Abstract A computational scheme coupling the Boundary Element and the Finite Element methods in direct time domain is presented. The proposed approach is specialized for the solution of 3-D dynamic soil-structure interaction problems. The BEM, in conjunction with the B-spline fundamental solutions, is employed for the representation of the semi-infinite soil region. The time domain solution of this region is obtained in two steps: first, the B-spline impulse response is obtained and, subsequently, the response to arbitrary excitations is computed by an appropriate superposition of the impulse responses. The FEM is used for the representation of the structural component. Two well-kn
