Abstract

A BEM-FEM formulation for membrane vibration analysis S.D.S. Liu, T.-D. Chen Institute of Mechanical Engineering, National Chung-Cheng University, Chia-Yi 621, Taiwan, Peoples Republic of China ABSTRACT An alternative Boundary Element Method (BEM) formulation coupled with Finite Element Method (FEM) is developed for two dimensional membrane vibration analysis following a weighted residual approach. In this approach the homogeneous term in the governing differential equation can be easily transferred to the boundary integration which leads to a sys- tem stiffness matrix; the inertia term which contains the frequency in it is approximated in a finite element form and leads to a system mass matrix. Numberical examples for circular, rectangular, and L shaped geometries were obtained in this study to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the method. INTRODUCTION The analysis of free vibration problems is one of the most active branches of numerical methods in structural
