Abstract

A two-dimensional design sensitivity analysis formulation has been presented based upon the indirect variant of the boundary element method and direct differentiation method. The sensitivities of stress components are calculated from the derivative form of the stress and BEM equations. In order to study the accuracy of stress sensitivities, stress gradients computed in this way are compared to these presented in literature. The effect of mesh refinement on the accuracy of stresses and stress gradients is studied. 1 Introduction Shape optimization of machine components with respect to maximum stress is one of the most important practical problems in machine design. A general methodology for shape optimization, which is of multidisciplinary nature links: ' geometric modelling (shape
