Abstract

Design and calibration of an earth pressure cell fitted to monitor diaphragm walls-soil interaction E. Cabella, R. Passalacqua Istituto di Scienza delle Costruzioni, Engineering Faculty, University of Genoa, Via Montallegro 1, 16145 Genoa, Italy ABSTRACT The design concepts and the procedures set up to build and calibrate a Total Pressure Transducer, referred to with the acronym «TPT» , are presented in the following paper. The proposed TPT is specially suited to retrieve and monitor earth-pressures acting against retaining structures. A prototype of such a transducer has recently been installed on-site in order to observe the thrust against a full-scale wall. This retaining wall will be cast in place against a curtain of micropiles, step by step underpinned and supported by six levels of grouted and post-tensioned tie-rods to allow a safe vertical cut through an unstable slope. INTRODUCTION Diaphragm, curtain and sheet ret-walls typically exhibit de
