Abstract

Obtaining and processing ultraviolet spectroscopic data for determining seawater salinity M. Mecozzi/ G. Visco/ o IsZz'Wo CenfWe per /a TZzcerm Xpp/zca^ a/ Mare, ma I. Italy , f mzza/e A/cfo Mom 72. J, ABSTRACT In this paper a new method to measure seawater salinity is described. This method is based on the chemometric interpretation of the UV spectra of seawater. The spectra are obtained as ASCII data files by a PC interfaced to the UV spectrophotometer and then they are processed by chemometric and statistic techniques such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Multilinear Regression Analysis which allow to define a quantitative relationship between the characteristics of UV spectra of seawater and the values of salinity. This new method which can be defined a "Multivariate Calibration Method", is not time consuming and it can be also used in on board analysis. INTRODUCTION Seawater salin
