Abstract

The current trend is that virtual GIS and virtual city are being developed to meet the same goal and that the two areas will be merged into a unified form of virtual geographic world, having geographical and analytical functionalities. We expect that the most plausible way of this technical merge is to provide the enhanced virtual reality to virtual GIs. For this, we suggest the synthetic modeling approach for virtual GIs. Our suggested synthetic modeling method uses the opposite approach to that of virtual city. It is based on the simple geographic data consisting of the essential topologic relationship. Our synthetic modeling concept is based on the symbolic metaphor of map. The synthetic modeling method contains the LOD mechanism in itself. Using this suggested approach, virtual geographic world built synthetically can be equipped with a fast data management ability, spatial analysis functionality, and the enhanced reality.
