Abstract

Hypertext support for planning and specification A.M. Fedorec, B. Knight & D.F. Cowell School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computing, The University of Greenwich, Woolwich Campus, Wellington Street, Woolwich, London SE18 6PF, ABSTRACT Within all engineering disciplines the formulation of plans, designs and specifications represents a significant investment in time by people whose skills are at a premium. However much design and planning time is spent on document production tasks which are considered by the engineers to be a chore, getting in the way of the actual design process. As a result, premature design solutions are often generated which later have to be modified with attendant escalation in costs. This paper describes research into the use of hypertext as an aid to document production with a back- ground expert system providing advice and critical scrutiny. This is illus- trated by means of a practical example of a system in use in the U.K. that assists e
