Abstract

In this paper we describe an integrated Finite Volume based model which simulates the shape casting process where effects such as thermal convection, solidification and residual stresses are calculated in a coupled manner. The paper presents the algorithm developed to model the interaction between the cast component and the surrounding mould, thus predicting the contact associated deformations and stresses which occur during the casting process. 1 Introduction During the casting process a cold mould is filled with hot molten material, which cools and solidifies^. As the cooling progresses thermal gradients evolve within the casting .
