Abstract

Numerical modeling of formation and movement of vortex rings using a shock tube A. Rychkov & H. Miloshevich Institute ofCompututiona1 Technologies SB RAS, Russia Abstract With the use of numerical modeling an investigation of the process of the formation of stable high-momentum vortex rings obtained with the aid of a special generator of shock waves, the structure of such rings, and their motion in an ambient medium at rest has been carried out. The vortex rings can move at rather large distances without a significant energy loss and are able to transfer the finely dispersed liquid or solid particles, which enables one to use them in various practical applications, including also the development of a weapon of non-lethal action. The results of numerical modeling agree quite satisfactorily with the experimental results in terms of sizes of such rings and the velocities of their motion in space carried out at the Institute of Chemical Technologies (Pfinztal, Germany). 1 Introduction In many tec
