Abstract

Mass transfer coefficients (MTCs) have been measured for single solvent drops rising through non flowing and flowing water in a short section of perforated plate extraction column and have been compared with the coefficients measured for free rise conditions in an empty column for different systems. Single drop mass transfer coefficients were determined as a function of drop size, mass transfer direction, distance between plates and down flow of the continuous phase. The degree of enhancement of the dispersed phase film coefficient due to the presence of plates has been ascertained. From the data obtained, it is concluded that only a moderate enhancement due to the presence of down flow is achieved for single liquid drop with a slightly increase in the drop size with increasing
